The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County (DOH-Escambia) offers a comprehensive Traveler’s Health consultation that provides advice on preventing serious illnesses and issues encountered with travel.

These include:

  • Region-specific immunizations
  • Prescription medications
  • Insect bites
  • Food and water safety

DOH-Escambia is a designated travel center. Travel information is based on the CDC Travelers Health recommendations. 

Dr. Wesley Farr is an Infectious Diseases specialist with 45 years of experience in travel medicine. He is certified in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health. He was Director of the Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health Course at West Virginia University from 1996-2000 and was also Director of the Military Tropical Medicine Course in Bethesda from 2004-2006. Dr. Farr has traveled to multiple countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. He enjoys learning about clients’ travel plans, sharing his experiences, and offering guidance on ways to stay healthy while traveling.


Foreign Travel Clinic Facts

  • Your consultation with the healthcare provider should be scheduled at least four to six weeks before departure.
  • The consultation appointment fee is $100 per person for each instance of foreign travel and includes up to five prescriptions related to your travel, if needed.
  • Immunization costs are not included in the consultation fee.
  • Travel immunizations are not considered medically necessary and are not typically covered by most insurance plans (including Medicare).
  • This appointment will consist of a travel consultation and possible immunizations. The physician will carefully review each traveler’s immunization and health needs and make recommendations based on travel plans.
  • Minors must have a parent present at the appointment.

How to Schedule a Foreign Travel Clinic Appointment

Call 850-595-6554 to speak with a nurse about scheduling an appointment. Customer service representatives are available to assist clients Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. 

Bring the following items to the appointment:

  • Passport – required for a Yellow Fever immunization
  • Driver’s license
  • For travelers over the age of 60, a healthcare provider’s note stating that the client is “immune-competent to receive the Yellow Fever immunization”
  • Detailed travel itinerary – the provider will review to make a thorough assessment of the health risks 
  • Immunization record (even if immunizations were received at DOH-Escambia), including prior travel-related records (yellow card)
