Tooth decay, including cavities, is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States. Nine out of ten cavities happen in the molars and premolars, also known as the back teeth. Tooth decay can lead to pain, school absenteeism, and poor academic performance. Dental sealants are the most effective way to help prevent decay and cavities and protect your child’s teeth.
What are Sealants?
Sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the surfaces of the teeth to block food and germs. The application process is quick and painless. First, the teeth are cleaned to help the sealant adhere properly. Then, the sealant is painted onto the grooves of the teeth, where it bonds. A special light is used to harden the sealant.
Children can receive sealants as soon as their first permanent molars appear, usually around ages 5 or 6. Sealants typically last about five years or longer and should be checked annually.
