On average 15 Floridians a day die of drug overdoses. Escambia County is responding with OD2A.  The goal of OD2A is to enhance overdose surveillance to develop data informed overdose prevention activities.

OD2A is currently funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s  (CDC) Overdose Data to Action cooperative agreement. The program launched in September 2019 and funds 66 jurisdictions across the country, including state, county, city, and territorial health departments.

Long Term Goals

  • Decrease rates of all opioid misuse and opioid use disorder (OUD).
  • Increase provision of evidence-based treatment for OUD.
  • Decrease rate of emergency department visits due to opioid misuse or OUD.
  • Decrease drug overdose death rate, including prescription and illicit opioid overdose death rates.

Overdose prevention activities such as the distribution of Narcan at all FDOH-Escambia locations and the development of Community Paramedicine programing with CORE will help to make the difference, one resident at a time.

  • How does Narcan work?
  • Is Narcan safe?
  • Where can I find Narcan?
  • What is Fentanyl?
  • What is Medication - assisted Treatment (MAT)?
Naloxone (Narcan) is an opioid receptor antagonist, meaning it blocks or reverses the effects of opioids and restores normal breathing
YES. There is no evidence of significant adverse reactions to naloxone. It only works if a person has opioids in their system, otherwise, the medication will have no effect.
Visit any of the 3 FDOH – Escambia County locations to receive Narcan for free.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 50-100x more potent than morphine. Fentanyl related overdose deaths have increased 790% since 2015.
MAT is the use of FDA approved medication in combination with counseling and behavior therapies to treat opioid use disorder. EX) suboxone, naltrexone, and methadone.
