Diseases and Conditions
Identify and understand the risk, transmission, symptoms, and treatments.
Disease Reporting Information
Health care and laboratory providers are required to report conditions of public health importance to the Florida Department of Heath.
The Epidemiology (Epi) Program seeks to prevent disease transmission in the community through surveillance, contact investigations, and education. Staff investigate reportable diseases to determine the source of the disease, the time and mode of transmission, and the number of people potentially exposed or impacted. There are currently more than 80 reportable conditions excluding HIV/AIDS, TB, and STDs.
Emergency Planning and Response
Epi staff are trained to respond to man-made health emergencies, such as bioterrorism, and naturally occurring health threats, including Pandemic Influenza. Epidemiologists are also responsible for monitoring and evaluating our community’s health status and needs during these events to assist in decision making regarding appropriate actions and interventions as well as making recommendations for prevention and control/containment.
Education and Community Outreach
The Epi program is available to community organizations, including schools and child care centers, as well as health care professionals for guidance regarding disease reporting regulations and health education. If you are interested in receiving education about disease reporting and/or disease prevention and control, please call for 850-595-6683 for more information.
