Petroleum Storage Tanks

The Petroleum Storage Tank Program is designed to protect the public from risks associated with petroleum tanks. Our main objective is to protect the drinking water aquifer and surface water bodies in the State of Florida. This program was initiated through an agreement with the Florida Department of Enviromental Protection to regulate aboveground and underground storage tanks. The regulated size for an Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) is greater than 550 gallons and the regulated size for an Underground Storage Tank (UST) is greater than 110 gallons. The rules that support the program are Florida Administrative Code 62-761 and Florida Administrative Code 62-762.

We perform several inspection types including required routine storage tank inspections, installation, closure, discharge, complaint inspections, as well as compliance assistance re-inspections for facilities that need to return to compliance.  We are contracted through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to inspect the following counties: Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Holmes, and Washington Counties.

Inspection criteria include, but are not limited to:

• Annual testing records
• Closure assessment for tank removals in all 7 counties
• Environmental releases
• Installation and all existing upgrades
• Discharge inspections
• Maintenance records
• Monthly visual inspection records
• Placard verification
• Financial responsibility records

Facilities inspected include, but are not limited to:

• Bulk fuel tank storage facilities
• Commercial fuel outlets
• Generator facilities
• Industrial facilities
• Lube and oil changing facilities
• Marinas
• Military bases
