Obesity Statistics in Escambia County

Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for many of the leading causes of death and disease in the U.S. including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer. There are many factors that contribute to the obesity epidemic. The number of meals eaten outside the home is one of those factors.

The Restaurant Factor

• The average U.S. adult eats 4.8 meals per week in restaurants.
• Portion sizes in restaurants have more than doubled over the past 20 years.
• Diners consume far more saturated fat, calories, and sodium than they would at home.

Take Action!

• Ask the server for the calorie information and make a healthy choice.
• Avoid extra calories from the complimentary items and appetizers.
• Choose grilled and baked options instead of fried.
• Box half your meal before you start to eat.
• Rethink the sugary drink; ask for water or other drinks without added sugar.
